Changing our relationship to waste

How can our business language, our mindsets, and our behaviour lead to a better relationship to waste? Ultimately, creating new operation and organisational models that create move us toward zero waste.

I made a short recently on Better business design: Reducing our waste organised by The Future Economy Network. The topic of waste in our businesses and how to reduce it made me really think “what is waste and what is our relationship to it?”

What The Future Economy Network said about the talk:

Matt Tipping, Founder of The Good Stream, set the morning off with a look at the language that is often used around resource and waste. Highlighting the subtle implications of using extractive and exploitive language when terming the planet’s life “source” as “resource”, can lead to unconscious and damaging effects of how we then treat our environment. Through beautiful illustrations and guided storytelling he brought to the forefront of our attention the impacts language can have on design, and reinforced that behaviour change for sustainable practice in business should not be placed on the shoulders of one person in the company, but everyone.

Which way are you looking at your business waste?

This is at the heart of changing our relationship to waste. Waste is a very human creation, one which needs us to think and behave differently. In my talk I looked at 6 aspects of business. All of which, when looked at through a different lens, may help us in this rethinking, or at the very least, make us think ‘what are the behaviours we need to change?’

Have a flip through the talk slides. We would love to know if our ideas can help you change your relationship to waste in your business?
